Amina El Khatib, Andrea Honsberg

Flashcards was a duo exhibition of Amina El Khatib and Andrea Honsberg that took place in Berlin and in Bolzano in July and August of 2022.

The Berlin exhibition was funded by a successful Kickstarter campaign and the Bolzano event was sponsored by the municipality and held at the civic gallery.

Curatorial statement

Flashcards are small note cards used “for testing and improving memory through practiced information retrieval”. This method is based on the idea that long-term memory is increased when some of the information is retrieved directly from memory during the learning period. The cards are typically two-sided, with a prompt on one side and information on the other. The subjects may include names, vocabulary, concepts, or procedures.

Flashcards is the first duo exhibition of Andrea Honsberg and Amina El Khatib that will take place in Berlin and Bolzano. At the beginning of 2020, at the outburst of the pandemic, the two artists started having weekly video calls. This intimate dialogue from the artists’ bedrooms resulted in an ongoing series of paintings, drawings, and short, GIF-like animations. Sort of flashcards retrieved from personal memory. There’s a story of a bird, a swimming pool, polished nails, and a sleepover. Small, often overlooked, moments that ultimately form the building blocks of our memory and identity.

Andrea Honsberg (Mexico, 1996) is a Berlin-based visual artist. She grew up in Mexico City and moved to Milan in 2017 to begin her studies at NABA. Her research focuses on origin, storytelling, and relationship with one’s surroundings. The works are heavily influenced by the beauty and complexity of words. They fuel the images evoked by narratives, dreams, and memories, real or not.

Amina El Khatib (Italy, 1998) graduated from NABA in 2021 and is now pursuing a Master’s degree at LUCA in Gent, Belgium. The works revolve around the visceral urge to draw. She often refers to her Berber (Amazigh) ancestors in her research. Her drawings penetrate the intimate bubble of their often unaware subjects and catch the irony in the simplicity of their lifestyle.
